The Smartvox-Pika Asterisk Small Business IP-PBX

Embedded Linux - Asterisk PBX - FreePBX Web Interface and Management - SIP/IAX VoIP

A Hybrid Solution: Connect analogue trunk lines and SIP trunks

The Smartvox Small Business IP-PBX is based on the Pika Asterisk Appliance (also known as the Pika Warp Appliance). It is supplied with a 4-port FXO module pre-installed and ready to accept your existing conventional telephone lines. This makes installation simple and ensures maximum reliability while still giving you all the power and flexibility of Voice over IP. Inbound calls can continue to be delivered via existing analogue lines, but smart dial plans mean that users can immediately start using VoIP trunks for all or selected outbound call traffic - your business can benefit from great savings on calls to all destinations, especially to mobiles and International numbers.

Select from a range of attractive, powerful and flexible office phones

Comprehensive support for the SIP VoIP protocols means you can use it with just about any make of IP phone. Choose from the huge range of feature-laiden IP phones from Aastra, Linksys, Snom, Polycom, Grandstream, etc. Office phones just plug into the existing office LAN floor boxes or data sockets. Add one or more Power-over-Ethernet injectors or switches to minimise your office cabling and power socket requirements. Also works very well with SIP DECT phones such as the Siemens Gigaset A580IP and with softphones. Smartvox can supply IP phones at competitive prices or you can source them elsewhere.

Compact size - but this is a powerful PBX system

The unit requires very little shelf or desk space and under normal environmental conditions, the dynamic thermal management system keeps the small cooling fan idle resulting in little or no noise. Power consumption is minimal (far less than a desktop or server PC).

The central processor is a 1200 mips Power PC 440EP and the unit has 256 MB of internal RAM. A 2GB SD memory card for storage of backups and voicemail is included. Powered from an external mains power supply (fully CE compliant) capable of delivering enough power to ring up to 9 conventional POTS-type phones simultaneoulsy.

Stay in control with FreePBX Asterisk Software

The Smartvox-Pika Asterisk Appliance has the well-known and widely used "FreePBX" implementation of Asterisk software pre-installed. A reliable, up-to-date, highly featured version of Asterisk with a powerful web interface for system administration, supervision and reporting.

Includes a range of call logging reports with flexible data filtering options.

Includes a web interface for users to access their settings and their voicemail messages.

How does the Pika Appliance compare with Trixbox?

Trixbox is a package that can be used to build an Asterisk PBX system from scratch. The hardware usually has to be sourced separately so you will need to buy a PC and a telephony card, then install the card, install Trixbox and configure it all so it works. The web interface that comes with Trixbox is essentially the same one as is used on the Pika Appliance - i.e. FreePBX. So the Smartvox Pika Appliance is the thinking person's alternative to Trixbox - smaller and quieter than a PC, software already installed, no hardware compatibility issues, same features and user interface, yet no more expensive and with the option to self-install or have it professionally installed and supported by Smartvox.

How does the Pika Appliance compare with the Digium Asterisk Appliance

It's an unfair contest - the Digium AA50 product is more expensive, not approved for use in Europe, has much less memory and can support fewer simultaneous calls. The Smartvox Pika Appliance uses the FreePBX administration interface, while the Digium Appliance uses the Asterisk GUI. The Asterisk GUI is an excellent product, but is generally less powerful/flexible than FreePBX, so Smartvox use it with their smaller-scale SOHO budget telephony solutions.
